Tynagh Abbey Duniry Juvenile Hurling Club in partnership with the Dwyer Family are proud to host the 8th Annual Pat Dwyer Sr.- Memorial U10 Hurling Blitz on Sunday 18th August 2024 in Duniry Community Sportsfield.

Following the hugh success of previous years Blitz, Tynagh Abbey Duniry Juvenile Hurling Club in partnership with the Dwyer Family are delighted to continue  the Annual Pat Dwyer(Sr) Memorial U10 Hurling Blitz which will take place on Sunday Morning 18th August 2024 in Duniry Community Sportsfield.

Tournament Rules & Principles

An underage ‘Blitz’ is a great way to develop young players under the age of 13. There are no scores taken and there are ‘no winners’ and ‘no losers’. Also unlimited substitutions give all players equal playing time. The team management monitors how a player performs by the work rate, the hooks and blocks, the number of strikes, the number of catches. Under the current rules of our GAA association there is no competitive competition/Tournament for players until they get to 13 years old. The reason for this is that the stronger players will dominate all games at a competitive level below this age and too many players get very little time on the ball and as a result do not develop.

Pat Dwyer

Pat Dwyer who immigrated to Canada in 1952 and soon after to the United States, trained and worked as a Master Mechanic in Rutherford New Jersey.  He loved the United States and how the free thinking of the United States had motivated himself and his friends to be the best they could be as young adults.  He loved being part of cutting edge innovation as well as spending Sunday's in New York's Gaelic Park playing and supporting the game of hurling. He returned with his wife Gabriel and Son Tommy to his native parish of Abbey/Duniry in 1963 to support his aging Mother and Father and became a member of the parish council as well as a visionary within the community. One of his many passions was being a staunch supporter of the local hurling teams and how it developed young people into becoming team players and future team leaders. It is with great pride and matched passion that The Dwyer Family continue this quest in his memory to support fundraising for these vital trainings and games of the Abbey/Duniry/Tynagh parish.

Club History

Our Juvenile Hurling Club is the underage section of our Parent Club Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry Hurling. We are located in Southeast Galway and the Club takes its members from the Parishes of Tynagh & Killeen and Abbey & Duniry.

The Club caters for boys between the ages of 6 and 17 years of age and fields teams at 8 age grades from Under 7s to Under 17s. There is a very strong tradition of hurling in both parishes stretching back to the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) which was founded in 1884. The foundation of the GAA has very strong links with Southeast Galway. The first game played under the newly formed GAA was played in Duniry in 1884.

Hurling has been played in this part of Galway for centuries and the Club are proud to continue this tradition into the 21st century.

The Juvenile Club was founded in 1996 by the amalgamation of Tynagh and Abbey/Duniry Juvenile Clubs due to falling player numbers in both parishes. The Clubs amalgamated at adult level in 2004 and compete at senior level in Galway.

Tynagh Abbey Duniry is located in a rural area and player retention and development is very important for the survival of our club into adult competition. We are a competitive club and compete well in the high grades in the U13, U14, U15 and U17.

We are very proud to have players representing our club on County Teams every year.
This year, Darragh Kavanagh, Ronan Daly and Joe Lawless represent the Club on the County Galway Under 14 Teams
while Eoin Donnelly, James Devine and Colm Lawless represent the county at U15 level while Jamie Ryan is on the county U17 team (Minor).
All these players, like all the past County Players from our Club have developed through our Juvenile Club system.
All County Players both past and present give generously of their time to the Juvenile Club and provide coaching sessions to teams at all age levels. We are very grateful to them and wish them continued success in their County careers with Galway.

Our Clubs Vision

Our vision is that everybody in our community has the opportunity to be welcomed to take part in our games and culture, to participate fully, to grow and develop and to be inspired to keep a lifelong engagement with our Association.
