What is the Healthy Club?

Each club and community will differ in terms of what a healthy club is,
but some principles that underpin all Healthy clubs nationwide are as follows:

  • Recognise health and wellbeing as a core value, one that is everyone’s responsibility and everyone has a part to play
  • View health as something holistic that involves physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing
  • Seek to make our club setting as healthy as possible and set a good example through our practices, policies and partnerships
  • Aim to extend positive influence beyond the club membership, you don’t need to be a member of the GAA to participate in our many initiatives
  • Are an inclusive club that aim to offer people of all abilities and backgrounds the opportunity to participate in the club in a meaningful way
  • Recognise that we aren’t expected to do everything ourselves, but instead work in partnerships to build stronger more connected communities

Steps to becoming a Healthy Club

  • Receive Healthy Club Training
  • Club mapping – acknowledging and identifying the ongoing activities in your club
  • Community Consultation – give the members and community the chance to tell us what they want from us
  • Develop and activate action plan
  • Hosting a local launch
  • Reporting and reflecting

Our journey to date

We set up in December 2018. We currently have 10 members on the team. Over the years, we have received our accreditation for foundation level, received our silver award and in October 2023 we were awarded our Gold status. This is the highest standard of the Healthy Club awards and TAD Healthy Club are the first club in County Galway to receive this, an achievement we are very proud of.

Some examples of our Activities/Initiatives

  • The Gathering

A get together for the community with local musicians and a great excuse to meet people and have a catch up. We have purposely organised this around Christmas time, as it can be a lonely time for many people

  • Ireland’s Lights Up

For four years, we provided a safe and secure walking place for our community, twice a week for 11 weeks

  • Every Step Counts

Individuals sign up to this challenge on line with Irish Life, their daily step count is tracked over a period of time

  • Information evenings

Over the years, we have organised and facilitated talks on many different areas. We have had experts talk about drug and alcohol addiction and suicide awareness. A mental health first aid course was given to help our community support others. We had a nutritionist talk to our Juvenile players to help them to understand how best to fuel their bodies pre, during and post games

  • Cardiac Screening

We were very lucky to have the club subsidise cardiac screening for over 40 members

  • Darkness into Light

The last two years have seen very successful events for Darkness Into Light in Tynagh Abbey Duniry. The community have walked and talked together, while remembering loved ones lost but looking to a brighter future

  • Social Dancing

A new and successful initiative in the Community. It was enjoyed by both young and old

  • Couch to 5k

Another new activity that had the new running/walking track in Tynagh busy for 7 weeks

Tynagh Abbey Duniry Men’s Shed Group

Tynagh Abbey Duniry Hurling Club

Tynagh Abbey Duniry Men’s Shed Group was formed in March 2023 in response to an identified need for support and inclusion of men in this area. The aim of the group is to improve the physical and mental health and well-being of men by encouraging them to remain active participants in the local community. Being part of the group enables those who otherwise may feel isolated and disconnected to feel valued and of value. The group will encourage the sharing of skills, knowledge and information, giving members the opportunity to engage with their peers in a safe and welcoming space.

Our Mens Shed is located on the far side of the pitch in Duniry Community Field – in the old dressing rooms. We are currently upgrading & renovating the building to be suitable for our purpose & more importantly to be wheelchair accessible.

We currently meet on Tuesday evenings in Duniry Hall at 6.30pm, we will meet in the hall until the Shed is ready to use. We welcome new members, come down & have a look, meet the current members & find out how you can get involved. Feel free to contact any of the committee members directly if you have any questions.
